For the past few months, we have been involved in a rather exciting GTR build, that GTR belongs to our good friend Anthony Gaylard, most GTR, in fact, most car enthusiasts will know all about Anthony's rather epic GTR and his 2017 assault around the famous green hell, the Nordschleife, aka, the Nurburgring, with the guys from Lichfield Automotive and their push to crack the 14.2-mile circuit in under 7 minutes which they achieved.

Although we are privy to the build, we cannot report much at the moment, as the build is being kept well under wraps, plus we have been sworn to secrecy, but what we can talk about is the GTR will be running some of our carbon fibre aero goodies along with our Forged Magnesium 2-piece wheel.

The wheel measures 12.5" in width and 21" in diameter, offsets are bespoke for the build, but we need aggressive offsets to fill out the extra 4" of width front and rear that the new parts give, so we are pleasantly surprised at the wheel coming in just under the 11 kg in weight, the benefit of using magnesium forged wheels.

12.5x21 Forged Magnesium Wheel

Not only do magnesium wheels weigh significantly less than a forged aluminium wheel, the weight is merely the starting point, forged magnesium wheels have superior benefits over aluminium forged wheels, which also include a lower unsprung rotating mass, a lighter wheel is much easier to spin and to stop, due to a lower momentum of inertia, improved acceleration, shorter stopping distance, better handling, longer life for brakes, tyres and all suspension components, as well as better braking efficiency, magnesium wheels also allow for faster heat dissipation which prevents overheating of the wheel and tyre assembly.

Our Magnesium wheel sales are slowly taking off thanks to clientèle that want only the very best for their road or race car, they want the pinnacle product and that for us is Magnesium.

Our magnesium range consists of 1 piece forged monoblock, or 2 piece forged barrels with Magnesium centres, the 1 piece limited to sizes and widths, so we can not accommodate every application with the 1 piece wheel, especially the bespoke builds, but the 2 piece we can build pretty much any application.

To showcase our products we will be building a set of our 2 piece for Anthony Gaylard mighty Nissan GTR that is currently under going some major aero upgrades for another assault around the green hell, the superb Nordschleife, or Nurburgring as its fondly known, with another go at the sub 7 minute lap, and this time Anthony is holding nothing back, his GTR will be wider, with a lot more features based on aerodynamics, and with the sneak peek we have had its one awesome looking machine.

Anthony's GTR has the very best of everything, its a complete beast of a car, with Alcon supplying the adjustable peddle box as well as an all new braking system, we will reveal more of those parts when the car breaks cover.

VAD Forged Magnesium 2 piece

With the new upgrades, especially the wider front and rear bodywork he needs wheels, and for Anthony only the best will do, so we will be producing our 12x19 & 13x19 2 piece forged magnesium wheels, with titanium hardware, weight should be circa 7.9kg per wheel .

So what are the benefits of forged magnesium over forged aluminium. Magnesium is the lightest metallic structural material available, its less dense than Aluminium, so Magnesium wheels can be designed to be significantly lighter than its Aluminium counterpart, so not only is it lighter is also a stronger material.

Carbon fibre wheels are on the increase as customers start to demand the pinnacle material when it comes to wheel manufacturing, with even the likes of Porsche joining the super lightweight wheel party with their introduction of their own light weight carbon fibre wheel. There are a couple of 1-piece after market wheels already on sales, but for our tastes they just don’t quite cut it, sorry but it has to look aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well as doing what it says on the tin … the two piece wheels that have also hit the market recently also lack that certain “Je ne sais quoi” there isn't one wheel design that gives us that “wow factor” and certainly wouldn't invest the large sums of money the manufacturers want for their product, they may have function, but they lack form.

As a company that cut its whiskers on custom manufactured 1, 2 and 3 piece wheels, we are always looking for the perfect wheel, It’s something we strive for year after year, only a few months back we discussed and showcased our first ever magnesium and carbon fibre hybrid forged wheel in 1 piece monoblock form, that we built for our good friends over at Icon F1, these wheel were built or their amazing Mercedes AMG C Class Coupe Edition 1, not just any Edition 1 either, this is a limited run of the Motorsport edition, it’s a beast of a car, larger brakes, better interiors, and a bit more power, we are still aiming to bring you to full installation article over the coming weeks, but we have both had really busy schedules, but something we will report on when the testing happens.

The good thing about using a 1-piece forged magnesium monoblock wheel is the weight, if you get the design right the product is super light whilst being immensely strong, but the applications are extremely limited, we simply cannot offer every fitment as the monoblock forgings have limited widths, which is a little frustrating, it’s the same with our 3 piece forged carbon composite wheel, applications are again limited due to a variety of issues, brakes and offsets are the two problem areas for the 3 Piece composite carbon wheel configuration, but we now have a great light weight solution for most applications.

Carbon Fibre Barrels, Forged Magnesium Centre, 2 piece Hybrid Wheel

We have a 2-piece hybrid wheel and the product is pretty special, the first part is a carbon fibre barrel and the best bit is these carbon fibre barrels have full German TUV approval, so straight way it’s a product that inspires confidence, the second part of the wheel the centres are forged magnesium, fixed with titanium hardware, a combination that is not only stupendously light weight, but incredible strong, with the added bonus, you can pretty much have any design you want. There are already designs in place with all of the current VAD designs available to choose from as well as new designs being added over the next few months. The size and widths of the barrels are as follows, with a huge range of applications available to include centre lock, custom bespoke builds are also available on request.
