Lots of excitement around the launch of Porsche incredible 935 that has been launched in homage to the 935/78 Moby Dick, and why not it’s a master piece, based on the incredible 991 GT2-RS chassis with 700hp at a cost of £750k with 77 pieces set to be produced, Porsche with yet another masterpiece for its 70th anniversary, but whilst everyone is drawn to the all-new 935, its made us appreciate the original homage to the amazing Porsche 935 ... the awe-inspiring Kremer Racing K3R.

We have covered this particular Kremer creation before back in January when we went to visit them in Germany, but we feel this car is worthy of a revisit, because as we have seen it in person we can confirm, it’s a complete master piece.

It was the brain child of Eberhard A. Baunach, owner of the modern day Kremer racing, he approached Holger Zimmerman of Zimspeed to create the modern day K3 based on the 997 chassis, Holger’s father Ekkehard Zimmermann owns DP Motorsport and pretty much built every original Kremer Racing 935 K3 body work and beat Porsche at their own game, so the history behind the build is pretty legendary, and to say that Holger created a master piece is such understated comment, up close and personal the car is just incredible, and considering they based this on the 997, the similarity to the older 930 cars is a testament to what he has created, seeing them both side by side you can see his creation is pretty spot on, considering it’s not only a different chassis but a different era.

Kremer Racing K3R

There are 2 base models at the moment, a track car and a road car, with a further 997 Turbo about to join the line-up and this is the one that we feel will launch the model right into the public eye. Big power and small modifications to allow a not only a wider wheel, but also a much larger tyre set up, as well as all the modification to help the air feed the rear inter coolers, its one car that we have seen take shape, but have been unable to discuss, but that’s all about to change.

It one car that we feel we just have to build for the UK market, we already have the theme we want to build it around, its just a case of clearing the decks and being given the Kremer green light.

For our third and final day of meetings Holger took us to see Kremer Racing in Cologne (KOLN) we had already had a taster of what was to come seeing a K3R Turbo being built at Holger’s HQ, but we hadn't seen a fully built car.

On our arrival the owner Eberhard was in a meeting, so we had a chance to have a look around the workshop and get to see the K3R up close and personal in both road and race form, and they are super wide, and so radical, and what was extra special you get to compare to the original 935 k3 chassis as they have two original and immaculate cars sitting in the workshop, we have said it before and we will say it again, Holger absolute nailed the design, on some angles you would think the bigger 997 clad K3 is the older traditional model, especially from the rear and the rear three quarter view, incredible that these cars are some 35 + years apart yet the DNA is visible, its only the front of the car that has taken on a newer fresher look, it’s a perfect mixture of new and old, and extremely clever, I guess it helps that Holger has the original K3 imprinted, he has been around the brand all his life, and his was his dream to create a modern homage to the original creation and I tip my hat to Eberhard gave it his blessing, the cars and plenty of cash to get the programme going, Holger must be the ultimate salesman, considering Eberhard only ever saw a very rough drawing of the concept idea Holger had in his head, so credit to them both for bringing us an absolute beauty of a modern day K3.

We had the privilege to see a racing K3 and also the road going K3R that had just passed TUV certification, which means yes it can be driven on German roads, which is no easy feat.

Both of the 997 k3’s are based on cup cars, the racer has the Turbo style exhaust exiting either side of the bumper, with no front fender lights, this is a racer so they aren't needed, and it’s true to form with the original 935 K3, the road car has to have the lights, as the bumper lights don’t cover enough light in front of the car when its dark, but to be honest we prefer the double lights as well as the bumper lights, it gives the car a real super-car appearance, with our preferred centre exit exhaust and it just looks so much better, we also prefer the 997 rear lights exposed on the racer over the blacked out ones on the road car, I guess it’s all down to personal choice.

The plan is to launch the car globally, and we are hoping to build one for the UK market, as well as offer them as a build to our current customers around the world, but its early days and there is still a lot to do, like a reworking on some of the parts, like the rear quarter moulds being redone so the panel sits a little better over the wheel and tyre combination, you can rest assured that we will shout it from the roof tops once we know the plan of building the cars, what we do know is we will be involved.

Kremer K3R 997 Porsche road car

I couldn't help but think to myself sitting in the Kremer show room what Erwin and Manfred Kremer would of thought about the modern take on the old classic, and although Erwin has passed, were told Manfred frequently visits for a coffee and a catch up, what a legend.

 

Every now and again a build comes along that simply blows you away, well for us it’s the Kremer Motorsport K3 -997, and what a spectacular machine it is.

Every car enthusiast will know, or should know all a about Kremer Racing, especially the K3 and their racing history, even if you aren’t an avid Porsche fan, any petrol head will remember the old Kremer 935-K3, that was based on the old 930 Porsche Turbo chassis, it totally devastated all in its path, it was such a formidable machine from the late 70’s early 80’s, who can forget that noise of the flame spitting 850bhp, these magnificent wide body beauties dominating race tracks all over the world, especially in the hands of Klaus Ludwig, winning Lemans out right in its class in 1979, they truly were incredible machines, in every detail, it was kremer racing at their very best.

Now enter 2016, and they have been working hard on a very special machine, with the help Holger Zimmerman, and oh boy… we can confess, we want one so bad, it hurts… the all new K3 997, yes you read that right… K3 body styling with a 997 chassis, it’s totally genius, mixing the old look, with a more modern chassis, what a fantastic recipe, we are totally mind blow, whoever came up with the idea, is a complete genius, yes it going to be expensive, but just look at it, its immense, did we already mention we wanted one… Dear Santa.
