We took delivery this week of the FOM Performance forged wheels for the Speedwells project Datsun 280ZX V8 Turbo and to say are happy is an understatement, the quality is absolutely stunning and we myself and Iby are so pleased with the design, its an old school look but has all of the modern day forging technology, I really don’t think there is a better choice of wheel design for this build.

FOM have a huge selection of designs as well as making some of our own VAD wheel designs throughout 2020, the first one will be our F1 design for our Z4 GT3.

The range is available in 17” 18” 19” 20” with other sizes be added to the range in the coming months, but generally if the blank forgings are available then the sizes, widths and offsets can be produced.

As with any custom 3 piece range the sizes, widths and applications are endless, as with the finishes, so if you have a request… get in touch.

Its been a while since we have blogged about the Speedwell's Datsun 280ZX V8 Turbo build, so we thought it was about time we showcased exactly what’s been happening, it has been timely process but as it’s a ground up restoration as well as the huge list of one off modifications, the time scale can be forgiven.

The last time we discussed the build the car was in full chassis strip down and had just gone in for paint, we are pleased to report lots of yummy upgrades have been added since the glossy white top coat finish.

The V8 Engine with additional turbo and gear box has been installed, with the exhaust under construction, what we do know is that it will be a twin exit set up with some trick looking tail pipe ends, that will enhance the custom bespoke built gloss black Speedwell's diffuser that adorns the rear underside of the Datsun, which is a sexy upgrade for the bumper-less ZX, another little touch we love about the rear is the black rear light panel that gives the rear such a menacing look.

All of the upgraded coilover suspension, roll bars and brakes are also fitted and in place, along with the custom over fenders have now been painted and on the car just waiting on the FOM Performance wheels that are currently on route from the European HQ.

The wheel choice is an exceptional one with our European wheel partners FOM performance really stepping up, giving the build a period correct style mesh design in the form of the 3 piece Weave 17, its an old school look with a modern forged twist, measuring 9x17 up front and 11x18 at the business end that will be wrapped in Nankang NS2R tyres, measuring 235/40R7 & 285/35R18 front and rear respectively, Nankang is a brand we really wanted to work with on this build and happy to say they have done us proud.

The build is really starting to gather some pace with Iby putting in some hours on the car, we know exactly how meticulous he is, so we are really excited to see the car come to fruition, we will update more as the ZX progresses.

We can honestly say we have no idea where Iby gets time to work on his projects as well as the hectic workload of working life, with the Porsche Turbo R undergoing some serious engine modifications which should see it pushing out the best part of 700bhp + with the new Turbo & ECU upgrade not to mention all of the other goodies the engine has been treated too, it should now have the huge performance to match those aggressive but stunning looks, let’s face it the 997 Turbo in factory form isn't slow by any means, so just imagine with an extra 200 + HP, this is going to be one incredibly brutal Porsche 997.

To complete the rest of the upgrades, with a fresh enhancement to the suspension being completed, with a bespoke set of Bilstein PSS10 coilovers that have been built to GT3R specification, such a fantastic addition to how this 997 will look & drive, all being well it should be sitting on the Bilstein stand at the Performance show at the NEC Birmingham in January 2019, so if you haven’t seen this car in up close and personal we strongly suggest you head to the show, it will be worth it just to see this beauty.

Not content with one project car on the go Iby also has the Datsun 280ZX and a few months back we did a blog post on the start of the build, and we are happy to report it has progressed a little further, it has sat around for a while whist the GT3R has got most of the attention, but with a slot booked in at Perfection Midlands body shop, the ZX was treated to some extremely sexy paint work.

The interior of the shell was treated to some matte black, with a nice contrasting gloss red on the roll bar, it’s a combo that looks amazing against the all new pearl white paint work which has been lavished on the external panels, and believe us when we say pictures don’t do this finish any justice.

With the Datsun painted the next job will be to treat the underside of the shell to some extra protection and then Iby can start to add the suspension set up and get the Lexus V8 Turbo engine sitting where it should be, as well as fixing the extended riveted over fenders in place, after they have had their coat of gloss black paint.

Its great seeing this build take some shape, and we will of course be sharing the build progress over the coming months, this is going to be one serious looking Datsun, with form and function.
